In early January, eager young Girl Scouts began taking orders for their famous Girl Scout cookies. Now the cookies have arrived, and the Scouts have been busy organizing boxes for deliveries at Evergreen Terrace since last week.
Jamie Corr, coordinator of the after-school program at Evergreen Terrace, has been volunteering for the past 20 years as a Girl Scout leader.
"Girl-to-girl friendships are very important," she said.
Corr, who was a Girl Scout herself, is still friends with some of the girls when she started out as a Brownie, which is one of the first levels before becoming a Girl Scout.
"I wanted to teach girls how to make good, sound decisions, be creative and think for themselves," Corr said for one of the reasons she is still involved with the Girl Scouts.
Evergreen Terrace has over 50 girls that are involved in the Girl Scouts program, including volunteer students from SIUC.
In the Jackson County area, they have sold 34,128 boxes of Girl Scout cookies according to Petra Massetto, marketing director of the Girl Scouts of Shagbark Council in Herrin.
However, it's not too late to get your cookies if you haven't. There will be a booth this Saturday and Sunday at the Carbondale Schnucks where Girl Scouts will be selling cookies.
