Time for country to heal and move on

DEAR EDITOR:

I was in your paper a short while ago after Undergraduate Student Government members didn't get my voter registration in on time, and since then I've found myself coming to a series of very painful realizations about this country's electoral process.

I'm afraid to say it but this election and the issues surrounding it has actually harmed the country. We could once all argue with at least some civility, but now we've become too angry to even talk to each other without screaming. People make movies that say mean things about one guy or another, or write songs, or hurl mud. And that makes me sad.

This stuff isn't democracy, this is fighting and polarization. This is a bunch of people tearing each other apart over labels. I think a lot of people have forgotten all about the war and are just ripping each other for the simple sake of doing it now.

Where's the common decency of mankind or the pursuit of singular truth? Didn't those good things survive hanging chads and WMDs?

I was going to vote Republican this election and that's OK. That's my personal choice, isn't it? It shouldn't mean anything in regards to how I feel about other people or even how I feel about people on this campus. The same goes for people who are going to vote Democrat. They're human too, and a label is not a person.

Regardless of who wins, I beg everyone to please remember that we all live in one country and that maybe it's just time to heal.
