A letter of apology

DEAR EDITOR:

I, as a member of the Undergraduate Student Government, would like to apologize to the students affected by the mistakes of USG dealing with the voter registration forms. This incident has disenfranchised students from all across campus. We understand the disappointment that the students involved in this are going through. It pains me to see that some people will not have the opportunity to vote for the leader of our nation. For many, this was the first election they could have voted in, and for others it was the first presidential election. I am sorry.

I would say to those who can vote, do not take this opportunity for granted. Many years ago young people between 18 and 21 could not vote, women could not vote, minorities could not vote, and the poor could not vote. I ask those students who are registered to vote to take the opportunity to exercise that right, for many people have died, and blood has been shed for that right to be granted. I ask you to become educated and understand the issues and the candidates. Understand that your vote affects many people. I know that some may be angry and hurt at the situation that arose with USG, and I understand that hurt and anger, and for that I say I am sorry - we are sorry.

It is already an uphill battle to encourage students to take part in their civic duty, and in this instance USG has failed. I hope that this incident will not discourage people from taking part in the political process. I hope that USG will take the time reevaluate the way this situation was handled for a better outcome in the future.

I know other USG members will join me in apologizing for the mistake and hope that students will accept our apology.

TyJuan CraticA
USG senator
