Interracial romance still frowned upon
DEAR EDITOR,
This part of the semester I have been a silent but avid reader of Curry's column for the same reasons a conservative Christian listens to Howard Stern. One sentence, however, from his October 7th column regarding interracial dating struck a nerve. He explains in the column that black men who interracially date are sell outs to the women. I have heard this before among black men as well when women jump the fence.
But my concern isn't that he is wrong, my concern is that he is telling the truth in today's norm among some black men and women. Therefore this letter is more for all the brothaz and sistaz who believe interracial dating is wrong, why?!?!
My black fiancé and I met two years ago and we will be married next September. I find it ironic that in those two years, I have been given stares, gestures, remarks, and even jumped because I'm white and 'she is just confused.' Also in those two years, I have been discriminated against by young black men and women more than white people, and even the older black generation that actually lived through segregation combined.
It's tragic to me that people are more open now than any other time in American history, yet most of my discrimination has come from the new black generation.
It makes me wonder where our society is headed when the very minorities trying to gain equality joke and discriminate against the ones trying to make a difference. Just remember that racism can be a two-edged sword, and who knows...once you go white, you might say a'ight.
