Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:

This is a response to the claims Aaron Smith made in his Sept. 16 letter to the editor. Barack Obama does support the law already on the books in Illinois, which states that if there is a "reasonable likelihood of sustained survival of the fetus outside the womb, with or without artificial support," the doctor must seek the route "most likely to preserve the life and health of the fetus."

Because this is the law what was the purpose of the "Born Alive Infants Act." It was an attempt, through a back door means, to redefine life in a manner which would greatly restrict legal abortion. Instead of an open and honest discussion on the matter of abortion, certain groups decided to link it up to legislation that bans what is already illegal. It's a political shell game in other words. And the fact that Keyes uses it shows his disrespect for the voters of this state.
