Homosexual weddings are illegal

Dear Editor:

First of all, I would like to thank all those who came out and supported my dear friend Michael Graham and me, in our attempt to show the community that even though we held a wedding ceremony on the steps of Shryock, it really meant nothing because we cannot get married. Michael and I are very good friends, he and I chose to participate in this event to show that gay couples are not allowed to get married.

The Saluki Rainbow Network, when organizing the event, wanted to use a real couple, but it was impossible. Most couples were afraid of losing their jobs because Southern Illinois is not the most open place. These couples also feared for their safety, because outing yourself in such a manner as I did on Tuesday can be very dangerous. The wedding on Tuesday was a staged event; Michael Graham and I are nothing more than good friends. We staged the wedding to make a point that even though we went through all the steps of planning, inviting guests and getting cake, in the eyes of the government that ceremony meant nothing because we do not have the ability to get married in this country, it is a right that we, as United States citizens, do not get.
