Pikes unity should be commended

Dear Editor:

We are brothers not by accident of birth, but by deliberate choice. Though we may come from different families, distant locations and sometimes different walks of life, we commune here under a common roof in an atmosphere that becomes home.

Greek life is about being committed to your brothers and sisters, recognizing the good in everyone and educating others who share common interests and strive for the greater good. We make better men and women out of ourselves and each other. When a brother has a problem, their chapter steps up and helps them in time of need. They give you the love and support that any parent would offer.

When I first told my father I wanted to join a fraternity, he was reluctant in support of my decision because of his inaccurate perceptions of greek life. From my time here I have learned about people and offer not criticism, but condolences to the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha. We, the members of the greek system, sometimes forget about our common interests and focus on all of our petty differences.

No one has the right to judge the Pikes for the death of their brother. Greek or independent, we have all experienced the loss of a loved one. People need to stop focusing on where the blame should lie and accept that accidents just happen. We are college students who are here for such a short time and want to have all of the most memorable experiences we can possibly have.

The negativity and harassment the Pikes have been subjected to following the incident is unnecessary and hurtful. This is not the kind of behavior SIUC should condone or permit in its student body. We are not happy with the decision to permanently ban the fraternity from our University. Rest assured that the brothers have all learned a very regrettable and unforgettable lesson. This is a lesson that should not have to be learned the hard way, and if they had an opportunity to change, don't you think they would? The pain endured on this campus will linger long after the last member of Pi Kappa Alpha becomes an alumni of the University.

The University can ban the Pikes from campus, but we will not turn our backs to those in time of need. Even without your letters, you will always have your bonds of brotherhood. Your unity should be commended.

Sincerely,

Adam Reeg
