Mr. SIU needs more coverage
Dear Editor:
I don't get to read the school paper much because I'm student teaching away from campus. However, after the recent Mr. SIU competition, I wanted to read the paper to see what would be said about those who competed, and to see my friend and roommate Phil Hurliman, not Heralman, as he was labeled in a picture of him accepting his three first-place trophies. However, I looked at the Tuesday addition and saw only two pictures of the event and no write-up at all!! Plus, the pictures involved people who didn't even win the overall competition or even Mr. SIU.
One would think the person who put the time and effort into getting ready for a competition such as this, a competition that takes courage, determination, unbelievable willpower and many other attributes. I'm glad the front-page news in Tuesday's edition involved the all-exciting "Iron Pour" that 10 people will go to, Saline County's new drug court and the on-going saga of a fraternity that can't control its pledges. Now that's great news, way more important than someone who has trained his guts out for the past 4 or 5 years.
Also, the sports page involved yet another story about a football player injured last year. Granted, he has courage, as well, to come back from his injury, but don't you think that story could have waited a day or two so we could get the story about Mr. SIU that happened over the weekend?
It seems the only way to make the paper at this school is to be gay, a minority or a drunken idiot. This is a shame because Phil Hurliman deserves better. But, he's not a minority who is upset because everyone isn't bowing down to him, or a gay student who's rocks have been defaced, or a frat boy that is well . . . a frat boy.
Needless to say, I am very frustrated with the DE, and I believe they owe Mr. SIU an apology, as well as the contestants who trained hundreds of hours to have the guts and the courage to get up on stage to show what hard work and determination will get you. I apologize to those contestants who weren't given a little respect by the DE, because you all deserve a pat on the back and congratulations for giving SIU students something to be proud of.
Phil, as your roommate and friend, I want to tell you I'm proud of you for your accomplishment, even if SIU and it's wonderful paper were not.
