Why was term hippie used?
Dear Editor:
What is a hippie? Maybe Mr. Berezow can explain what he means by Go home, you hippies which appeared Thursday in the Daily Egyptian. Is he trying to discredit the individuals who gather every Saturday to protest the war in Iraq? This group has included Vietnam War veterans, farmers, professionals (lawyers, teachers, psychologists, nurses, engineers), SIUC professors (from various departments), SIUC students, high school students, etc.
What is the thread that makes us all hippies? Is it our opposition to the crazed policies of the Bush administration? Or is it our willingness to stand up and tell others the emperor has no clothes? Months before the war started, we were telling those who cared to pay attention to what is now common knowledge: This preemptive war was unjustified, the reasons given for it were fictitious, it would be terribly expensive (in lives, gold and goodwill), it would only benefit war profiteers and it would become a horrible mess. Mr. Berezow's arrogance keeps him from seeing the obvious. Fortunately, more and more common-sense Americans are hip to this scandal.
