A possible insult to black professors

Dear Editor:

I am writing in response to the article by Herb Russell. It seems he is saying that black students want black professors, because they are black and not based on their "professional credentials." This is the same misconception about affirmative action ˜ that people are hired for a job or admitted to a university because they are black and not because of their "credentials." "I guess the black professors here at SIU were hired because of the color of their skin." The problem that black students have is the discrepancy of black students (2,500) to black faculty (59) because we are in the year 2004 and this needs to be addressed! Mr. Russell needs to get his facts together next time he decides to comment on an issue, especially this topic, because if you read between the lines he is insulting the black professors on campus.
