Watch out for the "real world"
Dear Editor:
I'm not necessarily writing in response to the letter by Mr. Youther that appeared April 9, but instead I want to address the complete lack of political imbalance your newspaper represents. It's not enough that the entire Southern Illinois campus is run by liberals (professors, students, staff), but everyone has to read one-sided, extreme left-leaning propaganda nearly every weekday in the DAILY EGYPTIAN. The sad thing is the conservative bashing is not restricted to the columnists' page; it pervades articles that should be presented without bias. The atmosphere around SIU is not unique to college towns. I knew I would have to hold my nose and be force-fed most of the liberal rhetoric that is passed down as fact in classrooms, but when a student who does not hold your ideals turns to your paper for relief and maybe some knowledge, I do not think they should have to stomach partisan politics there as well.
I guess what I really am disappointed in is the fact that I will not be present for every undergraduate's rude awakening when they leave the shelter of campus boundaries. There is a thing called the "real world" where not everyone gets a free ride and gets to spend days philosophizing at dive bars with hoards of people who share the exact same bleeding-hearted opinions. I'm sure the response to this article will be that the DE presents balanced news because you feature one or two conservative columnists.
I just argue that it's hardly a factor when their articles stand next to and amongst liberal garbage.
