"Oh My Gods!" is just poking fun

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to Mr. Milus‚ letter on the "Oh My Gods!" comic strip. Mr. Milus, as a former Catholic, I know full well that Christianity is far from perfect. On the opposite side of that coin, as an agnostic, I know that Christianity has certainly given the world more than enough ammunition with which to be satirized, and for its ignorant, domineering past, it may well deserve it in this day and age. As a friend of Shivian's, I can also say his intent with "Oh My Gods!" is to do no more than get a laugh from even the most conservative of people.

I have always believed the most basic, unadulterated and equalizing emotion we have as human beings is laughter. Have you noticed that Shivian pokes fun at his own faith‚s practices, both in his published and unpublished strips? Political cartoons have allowed humor to tackle complex issues and themes that not even the most brilliant columnist can escape unscathed from. Comedians and cartoonists can often laugh at themselves just as much as they can at anyone else on this planet; Shivian is more than capable of this, as I have observed of him and his strip.

I applaud the DAILY EGYPTIAN for allowing "Oh My Gods!" to be published. Mr. Milus, if you, and anyone else, have been offended by OMGs!, try visiting the website and e-mailing him with your concerns. He won‚t bite, and may actually pose some interesting questions to you. Shivian worked to have the DE publish his comic, and I think it has brought some "smart" humor to the comics section of the DE, much like "Stickman and Jackal" has at times. Are you a Martha Stewart fan, perchance?
