This semester has flown by. As a matter of a fact, I haven't had a slow semester yet. It seems as though the semesters are so crammed full of papers, assignments and presentations that it is just impossible to sit down for a minute and just relax. As you are reading this, I am studying for a final. If you are a student, your probably should be as well.

Thinking back, this semester has marked many changes for the University. Apparently John Kerry isn't the only flip flopper; Chancellor Wendler can't decide if he wants to stay at SIU or if he wants to go somewhere else. The bathrooms are a little cleaner and McDonalds is no longer reaping benefits from work-study funds.

The Democrats lost the election, the FCC is attacking everyone and Bush has four more years of making stupid public statements.

For the good and the bad, the semester of fall 2004 has been a remarkable and memorable one.

On a different note, I would like to thank my readers. I have had numerous amounts of emails in my hotmail box this semester from people young and old, students and professionals. Professors have commented on my columns as well as grounds keepers. I sincerely appreciate every e-mail I have received, no matter who you are.

Thank you to the gentleman who continually referred to me as a communist. You made me laugh, and you encouraged me to write about more controversial issues.

Thank you to the many conservatives. You made me angry, you made me cry and you proved to me that everyone has a different opinion; I just had the chance to publicize mine.

Thank you to the religious conservatives for your words of encouragement and your insights on my opinion.

Thank you to the readers who also served as copy editors. Your proofreading made me take an extra look at my columns before I turned them in.

Thank you to the liberals for boosting my ego. I know I am right, so thanks for reminding me.

What all of you readers may not know is that each of you assisted me in my writing. Whether you were e-mailing me to let me know that I am a devil or a saint, you made me write about the tough issues.

I feel as though my writing has improved throughout the semester, and I want to thank those of you who took the time to send me an e-mail. I thank you for helping me.

So here I am, stuck in the middle. My graduation date is now officially one year away, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Finally, I urge you all to continue reading newspapers. It not only ensures a job for me and my colleagues one day, but it also keeps you informed. Just think, maybe one day, years after you graduate, you can make the trip to Carbondale and pick up the DAILY EGYPTIAN, just as you do now.

To those of you graduating, best of luck. To the freshman, fasten your seat belt, for it's a bumpy ride. For the rest of us, hang in there. It will be over before we know it.

Arla is a senior in journalism. These views do not necessarily reflect those of the DAILY EGYPTIAN.
