Liberals shouldn't sell out to win election
DEAR EDITOR:
Deja vu. The Republicans have traded "terrorist" for "communist" to justify their long-time un-American activities. Guest columnist Peter Beinart on Friday threw "liberals" in the same boiling kettle ["To win, Democrats must be willing to fight," page 6].
"Liberal: not narrow in opinion or judgment, generous, charitable, ungrudging, progressive." If we purge America of these values, what is left worth having? Yet Hell hath no fury like that of a self-righteous Republican for a liberal.
Beinart's two whipping boys were Henry Wallace and MoveOn.org. Wallace was a liberal business man/scientist and statesman who served with distinction in all four terms of the successful Roosevelt administration. His hybrid corn doubled agricultural production to help end the Hoover Depression and win World War II.
MoveOn.org is a liberal news service on the Internet. It is an open alternative to the politically correct tailored news diet fed to us by the White House and the Pentagon.
American needs MoveOn.org to offset media monopolies mostly owned by Republicans and promoted by the Bush administration. Their one-sided reporting and mud-slinging are a serious threat to our democracy.
Subservience of television and printed news sources to the Bush administration has gotten us into bloody, costly wars that greatly stimulate international terrorism. There has been no demonstrated national interest for our invasions and no end in sight.
America needs more, not less, help from MoveOn.org to rescue us from creeping insidious war-justified despotism. Ye shall know the truth, and it shall make you free. It is easy to lose freedom and tragically costly to gain.
