Welcoming gays too controversial for NBC
DEAR EDITOR:
I would like to follow up on the guest column on Dec. 7 regarding the major TV networks' refusal to air the United Church of Christ's ads of inclusive welcome ["Since when does conflict turn off the networks?" pg. 6].
Some sources report that "Will & Grace" was among the NBC timeslots in which the UCC had hoped to buy ad time. If true, this adds some extra irony: NBC is happy to make money off a glossy depiction of the lighter side of gay life, but if someone wants to talk (very gently and tactfully, I might add) about one of the real issues facing gay men and lesbians in this country, NBC won't even let them pay to do so.
If DE readers are curious to see what all the fuss is about, they can view the ad for themselves at www.stillspeaking.com. And of course, everyone is always welcome to visit any of Southern Illinois' many UCC churches, such as Church of the Good Shepherd here in Carbondale, as well as University Christian Ministries, SIUC's UCC-supported campus ministry.
Like the ad says, "No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here."

interim director, University Christian Ministries
