Open mouth, insert foot
DEAR EDITOR:
Well, it's a little late to put my foot in my mouth as the damage has already been done, but I still have a responsibility to apologize. Reading three of the editorials in the Voices section in Monday's DE made me realize that certain things I'd written in my guest column ["Bush critics display post-election hysterics," pg. 6] were incredibly out of line. My column, in several places, showed just as much obnoxiousness and mean-spiritedness as the people I was criticizing.
The most significant of these mistakes was calling a person "pudgy." This was incredibly childish, and for that I have apologized to that person face to face. That action can't remove what I said, but I still have the obligation of admitting my mistake. As Mr. Jason Grenman of Carbondale wrote in Wednesday's DE, "Throwing around insults is not the way to handle the situation with respect and dignity."
Again, I'm sorry to for going overboard with my column. I wrote it when I was angry and tried to carry an edge of humor like I do most things I write, but I should have thought it through more. If I write to the DE in the future, I will try to use more intelligent devices like irony to create humor, rather than sophomoric name-calling - unless that name-calling happens to be pointed at 6,000-pound Michael Moore. JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING! See? Irony.
