Kerry supporters: Keep your composure
DEAR EDITOR:
This letter is in response to Bush won: time to leave the country which ran in the Nov. 5 DAILY EGYPTIAN [pg. 6].
To begin, I believe the column was in very poor form. For the Democrats and Kerry supporters such as myself, we will be judged politically by how well we handle the results of the election. I would like to say we are all handling it with poise and integrity, but that obviously isn't the case having read Mr. Campbell's article. Throwing around insults is not the way to handle the situation with respect and dignity. It makes the Democratic Party, which is judged like all groups by the actions of its members, look petty as well as impotent after the election results.
This moves me to my next point, which goes out to the populace of Carbondale and the students of SIUC: Do not let anyone make your mind up for you. Do not listen to radical views by either sides of the political spectrum. I encourage everyone in future elections to enlighten themselves and research their opinions and viewpoints through respectful discourse and various media sources.
If we accept what we're presented with at face value, no matter who says it, then we invalidate the entire political process at the most basic level. If all it takes it brow beatings and propaganda from citizens with sour grapes and political parties with agendas, then we may as well let the candidates choose themselves.
Again, I supported Kerry, and no, I'm not necessarily pleased with the election results. However, Bush won, Kerry did not push the issue, and we as a political party have no option but to leave it at the and support our current president.
Regardless what your political affiliation may be in the future, I would hope that everyone can look deeper in the issues and candidates, pull fact from fiction and not buy into empty party rhetoric.
