A picture of bias in DE?
Dear Editor:
So, apparently, it is impossible for even the humble Daily Egyptian to remain objective in their coverage of the election. I won't be so naive to say that I thought SIUC was without bias, or even that I was unaware of the liberal bias in American media.
What I will do is lament on the loss of information that has befallen our student body at the hands of the DE's editorial staff. Opening Tuesday's edition of the DE, I was faced with two pictures, both large, of the two major presidential candidates. What upset me was the use of a very good; a presidential, if you will, picture of John Kerry. Next to that was a picture of George W. Bush wiping his brow, and ultimately, hiding his face.
Reading the article, along with several other articles about Bush, the election, or Republicans in general, it is obvious of the loaded language used to denounce Bush, and make it seem as if Kerry is supported.
One problem, though, is that Kerry is not being supported. The liberal rhetoric that every news show spouts to anyone who will listen is, "We have problems with Bush and the war in Iraq, so we are going to support this other guy."
If you're going to make painfully clear that you hate Bush, then please don't make a pretense in your "mission statement" to be objective. While you are helping students to better understand the issues that affect their lives, you should add in, "Also, to help someone other then Bush to be elected." Maybe then you can run a picture on the front page where a baby is crying, and the caption would read "George W. Bush, you did this..."
If you are truly in the business of helping the students to better understand social and economic issues that affect them, then give them the tools to make an effective decision, but stop trying to make the decision for them. It upsets me the way a student-run organization looks their peers in the eyes everyday, lying to them by telling them they got a fair and objective view of the issues that affect their lives.
