Americans can learn much from cricket
Dear Editor:
Thank you for your fine article on the formation of the SIU Cricket Club. The students involved are to be praised for their drive and determination. The matches on the weekend were fun, and the competition, while spirited, was very friendly.
Americans can learn a great deal from the game. Yes, it is much like baseball but with some great differences as well. A batter in good form can stay "at bat" for an entire match because he never HAS to run: he MAY, when he chooses to do so.
The British took the game all over the world ˜ Canadians, Indians,
Pakistanis, South Africans, Australians and New Zealanders are among the nations that field competitive teams. Breaking for lunch, tea and periodic drink breaks (it can get rather warm on the field) are all part of the game.
As faculty adviser to the Cricket Club, I would extend a warm welcome to anyone wishing to learn the game. We will be playing matches again in the spring and will certainly be organizing things prior to that. Keep your eyes open for our signs, or come by my office in Faner Hall (2082). Cricket is spoken here.
Cheers,
Dr. James Stewart
