Bring issues to attention of GPSC or Faculty Senate

Dear Editor:

Thank you for printing Ms. Williams' (no relation!) response in Friday's issue. I hope the Morris Library will reward her articulate defense with future employment opportunities. But I beg to differ on several issues especially concerning the "blame the victim" reference to patrons who "abuse/misuse" already defective copy machines. The Internet access may be free, but downloading material on the reserve is not.

As an advocate of technology, I would suggest Ms. Williams visit Lawson Hall where at least two DVD machines were defective on Thursday evening despite the heroic efforts of one of the beleaguered student worker present who also had to deal with other classrooms. We often need hard copies, especially when the library mainframe malfunctions. I guess I have been more fortunate with building and car repair estimates (thanks to Dave's Auto Repair). At least the costs have not risen to $12 million!

However, as my last word on the subject, I wish to conclude by thanking the Daily Egyptian for voicing these concerns and suggest it is now time to bring these important issues to the attention of relevant bodies such as student councils, the Graduate Council and the Faculty Senate - that is, unless nobody cares.

Tony Williams

professor/ area head of film studies
