Flag etiquette needs to be learned

Note: The following article contains information that was found to be untrue. The existence of Kodee and Dan Hennings, and Colleen Hastings was a hoax.

Dear Editor,

I was pleased to see Monday's letter to the editor by Kurt Paradis drawing attention to a growing problem in America: flag desecration. Although Americans believe that they are showing respect for our great nation by proudly displaying American flags, they are actually lacking knowledge about proper flag etiquette and thus aiding and abetting the terrorists.

I took the liberty of locating some general guidelines that will send a swift message to the terrorists about the power of pride. The flag code states: do not use the flag in any form of advertising (sorry, the Old Navy shirts will have to go), do not place any object or emblem of any kind on or above the flag, do not permit disrespect and do not leave the flag out after dark without it being lit (lights may be purchased at Lowe?s). I encourage every one of us to spend an evening freshening up on how to respect the U.S. flag.

In addition to proper flag etiquette, I must say that I was most pleased by the illustration on the cover of the Sept. 11 DE; however, my spirit was crippled after reading the information regarding the U.S. PATRIOT Act. These critics are clearly out of touch with mainstream America. Next, the critics will be encouraging Americans to vote Democratic in 2004. Not to mention, angry liberals scare small children. We should all think of young Kodee in times like these.

Critics have misunderstood the true intentions of the U.S. PATRIOT Act. Perhaps they should take a closer look at it, because it intends to keep America safe and free. Not to mention, Attorney General John Ashcroft has worked diligently to dispel the myths that radical groups, such as the ACLU (American Communist Labor Union), have been making. But he is only one man.

As Americans, I call on you to help dispel these myths in your own community. Perhaps these critics are mingling with the wrong crowd. They should consider joining an RSO or an intramural sport.

Look, if the government needs to tap my phone or read my e-mail to keep us safe from evildoers, well, I have nothing to hide. What do YOU have to hide?

Sincerely, Jennifer Killham senior, University Studies
