I'd like to respond to the letter by Marty Obst printed Thursday. Mr. Obst ends his letter with the hope that USG and GPSC will support and embrace the implementation of a 1-percent tuition increase for the library. I'd like to let Mr. Obst and the rest of the campus community know that, as of Thursday, neither GPSC or USG have received any information from the administration requesting such an increase. We would expect the administration to come before our constituency bodies with a request for support if such an increase were planned. Both student governments engage in thoughtful deliberation and seek constituency response before voting on any tuition or fee increase proposals.
Rumors about a 1-percent tuition increase for the library began to surface after the administration learned that the Planning and Budget Task Force recommendation for a student fee to support the library was not possible under state law. GPSC has indicated to the chancellor a willingness to discuss the possibility of a user fee for the library. That fee would be paid by all users of Morris Library so that all members of the campus community who benefit from the library also help to support its continued excellence. However, at this time, no proposal for either an increase in tuition or a user fee has been brought forth by the administration.
