Three deans, housing director among sought after workers
Several administrative positions at SIUC will be vacant when the fall semester gets underway Aug. 21.
Searches are ongoing for three college deans, a University Housing director, head of International Programs and Services, Counseling Center director, and director of admissions. Several faculty and civil service positions are also open.
University officials have desired to make hires at various levels before classes begin, but said recently those decisions could come as late as the semester's end.
Provost John Dunn, whose office oversees the hiring of academic department leaders, said the coming and going of University employees is expected and does not cause much problem.
"This is just part of the natural cycle of academia," Dunn told the Daily Egyptian in June.
The College of Education and Human Services has been without a dean since last summer and the College of Liberal Arts Dean Shirley Clay Scott begins work at Hunter College in New York City this month. College of Science Dean Jack Parker is set to retire before the end of the year.
Dunn recently filled the deanship of the College of Business and Administration by hiring J. Dennis Cradit after a yearlong absence of a dean in the college.
"We've got some good people running the colleges while we search for permanent replacements," Dunn said.
University Housing Director Ed Jones departed June 31 after nearly 20 years as the organization's leader for a position at California State University in Sacramento. Lisa Marks, an associate director of University Housing, is the interim leader.
Larry Dietz, vice chancellor for Student Affairs, said the University Housing search committee has fielded several applicants for the director post. He said he expected to make an appointment before the end of the fall semester.
"That search is really trucking along. I'm confident we'll make an announcement sometime this semester," Dietz said.
International Programs and Services, which assists and recruits international students, lost its longtime Director Jared Dorn June 31. Dorn accepted a position at the University of Thailand in Bangkok. Dietz said he was unsure when a decision for a new director would come.
A search is also ongoing for a director of admissions, who will be charged with selecting SIU's new students.
Tina Collins, assistant vice chancellor for Enrollment Management and director of Records and Registration, said the director of admissions would round out the enrollment team during a massive administrative restructuring.
On July 1, several departments, including Enrollment Management, were transferred from the guidance of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Larry Dietz to the office of Provost John Dunn. Chancellor Walter Wendler said he proposed the restructuring so student life and enrollment issues would be given the full attention of separate offices.
