Parking rules enforced throughout summer

Students who have yellow decals, which are free but only allow parking in two lots near the Arena, can obtain red decals for $12 during the summer semester.

"Sure, everybody would like to park as close to their classes as possible," Mager said. "There's no sense making a student park out by the arena when there are spaces available that are closer."

Parking violations, such as parking in a campus lot without an authorized decal, result in a $35 fine. Mager said he was not sure how many parking tickets have been issued this summer.

SIUC parking division administrator Brian Mager said that although fewer students use the parking lots during the summer, parking rules are enforced throughout the year. "The main purpose of issuing tickets is for people to gain compliance with the parking rules," Mager said.

According to a list of parking regulations available at the campus police Web site, "parking revenue charges are for the purpose of providing and maintaining a safe and uncongested means for the movement and parking of vehicular traffic on the campus of SIUC."

Between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005, there were over 11,000 on-campus parking decals issued, Mager said. He said it would be hard to say how many students use the parking during the summer.

Linda Bens, SIUC Institutional Research department assistant director, said there are nearly 11,000 fewer on-campus students enrolled during the summer than there were during the spring.

Restrictions on parking are enforced between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
