As the renovation of Altgeld Hall nears completion, Morris Library is wasting no time moving its offices into the Northwest Annex space vacated by the School of Music.
Phil Gatton, director of Plant and Service Operations, said the Altgeld Hall project is substantially complete, with only "punch list" items remaining, such as touch-up painting.
Morris Library's instructional support services and computer support services units have already relocated to the Northwest Annex. The library administrative offices and accounting offices are expected to move to the temporary location by Friday.
Susan Logue, associate dean for library support services, said the library's servers would be moved Aug. 14 and 15. The library will be closed Aug. 15.
Since the servers provide a gateway to many electronic resources provided by the library, those resources would be temporarily unavailable until the servers are installed at the Northwest Annex.
Logue said the server relocation should be complete by 7 a.m. Aug. 16.
The asbestos abatement in Morris Library's basement is substantially complete, Logue added.
"There is still some put-back work going on in the basement like painting and lighting," Logue said.
Building Planning Librarian Jim Fox said three of the four systems services staff are relocating to the Northwest Annex. One staffer will remain at Morris throughout the renovation.
"We have about 120 public access computers, in addition to staff computers [at Morris Library], so we need someone on site to provide support," Fox said.
Fox said approximately 36 full-time staff would remain in Morris Library throughout the renovation project, in addition to a fluctuating number of student workers.
An estimated 50 full-time staff will relocate to the Northwest Annex, Fox said.
"It's shaping up to be a pretty big move. We didn't have control of the space until [Tuesday], and we had to get phones and locks changed," Fox said.
Gatton said site work on the McLafferty Annex has begun and should be completed sometime in December. Materials and staff should be in place by mid-January.
The site work includes berming - adding earth to alter the contours of the landscape.
Earth excavated from the Healthplex site is being used to construct the berms at the McLafferty Annex, Gatton said.
