Police searching for former SIUC student wanted for home invasion

Carbondale Police have named a suspect in connection with an armed home invasion that reportedly occurred at 9:30 p.m. July 11 in an apartment located at 509 S. Beveridge St.

Carlton E. Wright, 19, is a former SIUC student from Maywood and, according to a Carbondale Police press release, "should obviously be considered armed and dangerous."

Wright is a 5-foot-11-inch black male, weighing 220 pounds with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He might also have a tattoo on his right forearm.

According to police, Wright allegedly entered the apartment with an accomplice through the front door, which was unlocked. Wright and his accomplice were both allegedly armed with guns.

The 22-year-old resident of the apartment was watching TV with four friends when two armed suspects entered the front door of the apartment.

One of the suspects held the group at gunpoint, while the other suspect searched the apartment. The resident and the four friends were forced to lie on the floor while the two suspects fled.

Wallets and electronic equipment, valued at about $400, were stolen.

Carbondale Police Officer Randy Mathis said the case is being handled by the investigations department and said there is much more work that needs to be done in the investigation.

Wright is also wanted on a Jackson County warrant for an attempted home invasion, which occurred Feb. 18 in the 500 block of West College Street.

In that incident, a man who was walking his dog outside of his apartment complex told police Wright and another male slowly drove by in a dark blue Buick.

As the man entered his apartment with his dog, Wright allegedly tried to force his way through the resident's doorway while armed with a handgun. The resident of the West College Street apartment was able to close the door to prevent Wright from entering.

In both incidents, the suspect vehicle is described as a dark blue Buick or 1980s Chevrolet Caprice. It might also have a painted primer-colored spot on the driver's side rear fender.

Factoid: Anyone with information regarding Wright's whereabouts or the suspect vehicle is encouraged to call the Carbondale Police Department at 457-3200 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 549-COPS.
