Police arrest four men after knife attack

A knife fight at Sugar Tree Apartments that left two men injured resulted in the arrest of four Carbondale men Wednesday morning.

According to police, two men from Carbondale and Herrin where wounded when they joined in an argument between four men and one of the victims' sons.

Arrested were Juan Velzquez-Denguis, Everardo Aragon-Quintas, Edwin Carbajal and Anibal Carbajal, all of Carbondale. All men were charged with aggravated battery and mob action and taken to Jackson County Jail.

Edwin Carbajal and Anibal Carbajal also had arrest warrants for failure to appear in traffic court.

Police said when they arrived on the scene at about 3 a.m. the two victims reported being cut with a knife by several males in the parking lot outside the laundry room of Sugar Tree Apartments.

The altercation started when one of the suspects urinated in a parking lot of Sugar Tree Apartments in front of the victim's 4-year-old grandson.

The suspects fled the scene, but were later located and identified by the victims.

Both victims were taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and later released.

A representative from Sugar Tree Apartments said police had not contacted them and knew nothing about the incident. They refused to comment further on the subject.

Carbondale Interim Chief Steve Odum said unless the police felt Sugar Tree management could offer information in the case, it was unlikely they would contact them about the incident.
