Summer 2004 enrollment figures up slightly from previous year
Despite several factors that could have caused a slight decline in students, 2004 summer figures revealed what administrators are viewing as a "modest increase" in enrollment.
Summer enrollment for 2004 stands at 9,986 according to figures released Wednesday. This number illustrates a slight increase of 15 students from the previous year's enrollment of 9,971. The figures break down into 7,034 enrolled on campus and 2, 936 enrolled off-campus, predominantly in military-related programs. Sixteen additional students are enrolled at the branch of SIU located in Nakajo, Japan.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Larry Dietz said while there is a consistent decrease in enrollment from fall to spring, it is fair to conclude that numbers have been steady from fall to the present semester. Dietz said he believes the increase to be a positive indicator of upcoming numbers in the fall semester. At the same time, he said they are viewing the numbers realistically and as "pretty much flat" and stagnant with summer 2003 figures.
While the increase is admittedly slight, the figures do mark the first time in three years that enrollment numbers have been up from the previous year.
"We anticipate at least the first fall numbers will be up," Dietz said. "We know a lot of students are having to stay at home and work this summer and our numbers are still pretty even with last summer so that's a good indicator."
