Art Simon, founder and president emeritus of Bread for the World, a non-for profit organization that lobbies against hunger on Capitol Hill, will be speaking at 7 p.m today in the Student Center. He has headed this organization for two decades.
Last year, Simon was the recipient of the prestigious Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom award. Other winners of this award include Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr. and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
He has also received the Presidential Hunger Award for Lifetime Achievement and has written several books, including "How Much is Enough? Hungering for God in an Affluent Culture."
Simon also co-authored a book with his late brother, entitled "The Politics of World Hunger" in 1973. He will be honoring his brother, the late Sen. Paul Simon, with a lecture on world hunger. The free event is sponsored by the Public Policy Institute, which was founded by Paul Simon.
Carbondale City Councilwoman and daughter to Paul Simon, Shelia Simon said her uncle is motivated by helping fight the hunger problem across the world.
"He is very driven by his work and driven to make a difference," Simon said.
