The last candidates for the two associate provost positions have met with the search committee, but the final competition is yet to come.
While only two candidates vied for the associate provost of Academic Affairs earlier last month, three candidates contended last week for the position of associate provost of Academic Administration. The appointee will assist the provost on matters relating to faculty, including recruitment and contracts, and budget matters.
Provost John Dunn said the search committee should be meeting within the week to make its recommendation about both open positions.
"I think the committee has done an outstanding job of identifying highly qualified candidates," he said.
The first candidate, Paul Lansing, is the only candidate not from SIUC. Lansing, a professor in the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, talked about "Trust and Respect in the University" during his visit April 22.
Lansing earned his bachelor's degree in political science at City University of New York in 1968, following with a law degree from the University of Illinois. He has worked at U of I since 1990, but his experience stretches over several other universities.
Although he now specializes in business administration, Lansing practiced law for several years before beginning his teaching. He filled several different roles during this period, including arbitrator, mediator, labor relations specialist and contract negotiator.
Lansing was unable to be contacted due to an extended leave of absence from his college.
Donald Rice, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, presented his platform to the search committee Tuesday.
He has been with COLA since 1999, after eight years as a professor and researcher for the Center for Archaeological Investigations at SIUC. Before coming to the University, he taught anthropology at the University of Virginia and the University of Chicago and worked for several different museums.
Rice's current position has given him experience with the type of duties required from an associate provost. His duties require working with personnel, both hiring and management, and preparing allocation of funding within the college. In addition, he oversees grant proposals for research.
Rice earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees at Wake Forest University in psychology and anthropology and a doctorate degree in anthropology at Pennsylvania State University in 1976.
The final candidate, Patricia Elmore, associate dean for administrative services in the College of Education and Human Services, spoke on "Challenges for Higher Education in the 21st Century" at her Thursday presentation.
Elmore earned all three degrees at SIUC, beginning work at the University after receiving her second degree. Like Rice, her current duties are similar to those of the associate provost position. In addition to handling her college's budget, she works with personnel and manages research and facilities.
Elmore also works as tenured professor of psychology and statistics and measurements, a distinction she earned more than 25 years ago. Currently, she edits the journal Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development.
Dunn said the selection process has been moving as quickly as possible, with consideration for making the right choice in filling the openings.
"These are both very important positions," he said. "They provide a great deal of service for the University as a whole."
James Tyrrell, co-chairman of the associate provost search committee, said in an earlier interview that all feedback from the visits would be considered in the final recommendation. However, the provost will have final say over who fills the spots.
