As most of you who follow athletics at SIU know, the women's basketball team had been struggling a little bit during the beginning of our conference season. But, I am not going to dwell on any of the losses that have occurred. What I am going to do is tell you how sweet the victory felt when we defeated the Aces of Evansville Monday night.

Viefhaus named MVC Player-of-the-Week

SIU junior Adie Viefhaus of the Saluki softball team was named MVC Player of the week Monday. Viefhaus hit .571 with two RBIs, a sacrifice and a walk at the Triple Crown Invitational last weekend. For here efforts she was named Offensive MVP and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Viefhaus started three games and played in four at the tournament.

The Salukis will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Bama Bash February 14-16.

Men's tennis picked to finish sixth in MVC

The SIU men's tennis team was selected to finish sixth this season in the Missouri Valley Conference by the 2003 MVC coaches' poll.

According to the poll, Indiana State is picked to finish on top of the nine-team conference. Wichita State, Illinois State, Southwest Missouri State and Drake were all chosen to finish above the Salukis. Bradley, Evansville and Creighton were chosen to finish below.

The Salukis have finished ninth the last two seasons.

Women's tennis picked to finish fifth in MVC

The SIU women's tennis team was picked to finish fifth this season in the Missouri Valley Conference, according to the 2003 MVC coaches' poll.

Illinois State and Southwest Missouri State were both chosen to finish first. Drake and Indiana State were also chosen to finish higher than the Salukis. Wichita State, Creighton, Evansville, Bradley and Northern Iowa are expected to finish below SIU.

The Salukis finished tenth last season.

Women's golf struggles in Florida

The SIU women's golf team finished tied for 13th in the 15-team two-day Golden Panther Championship at the Doral Resort Silver course Tuesday.

The Salukis shot 353 Monday and 345 Tuesday, finishing with a 698. Illinois won the event with a 633.

Megan Tarrolly was the highest-placing Saluki, finishing in 28th place with a 167. Jennifer Shutt, who shot 177, finished 56th. Abbigail Johnson finished in 61st position with a 179.

Stefanie Pate and Tiffany Fritsche, who shot 183 and 187, finished in 183rd and 187th position, respectively.

Amy Rankin was second in the individual competition with a 173.
