'Bows get revenge on SIU

This time free throws cost the Salukis.

Just 48 hours after solidifying a Las Vegas Invitational championship at the line, the Salukis found themselves at the mercy of the charity stripe.

Trailing Hawaii by a point with 15 seconds left, SIU had a chance to take the lead, but a Randal Falker offensive foul put Vaidotas Peciukas on the foul line with a chance to increase the Rainbow Warrior lead.

Peciukas hit one of two free throws, which sealed the Rainbow Warriors' 66-64 victory when a LaMar Owen three-pointer clanked off the back of the rim.

"It looked good," Darren Brooks said. "I thought it was going in."

Brooks led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 11-for-21 shooting. Brooks also had five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Stetson Hairston added 16 points and four steals off the bench, and Jamaal Tatum had 12 points.

SIU (4-1) was out-rebounded 19-7 in the first half, 37-28 for the game, and went into the locker room down 34-29.

"That's a big reason why we weren't successful [Monday] - because of rebounding," Brooks said. "It was just one of those nights."

SIU outscored Hawaii 35-32 in the second half and tied the game at 46 on a Hairston jumper with 11:58 left.

Hairston nailed a three-pointer off an Owen assist giving the Salukis a 64-63 advantage with 1:05 left - the last of SIU's three one-point, second-half leads.

The Salukis didn't get much help offensively from Owen and Josh Warren. Owen scored two points from the free-throw line, missed every one of his six field goal attempts and turned the ball over five times.

Warren scored just one point, didn't take attempt a shot and had three rebounds in 20 minutes.

The Rainbow Warriors sank 80 percent of their free throws and made six more trips to the line than SIU. The Salukis shot 66.7 percent from the line.

The crowd of 6,926 fans, many dressed in black as part of "Black-Out" Night, saw Hawaii win its third game in its three-game homestand.

The victory also satisfied the Rainbow Warrior fans, who flaunted "SIU We O U," signs in response to the Salukis' ESPN Bracket Buster win against Hawaii last February.

Julian Sensley led Hawaii with 17 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The double-double was the first of the season for Sensley.

Brooks held Sensley to just four points last season but had trouble containing the 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward after picking up his first foul at the 13:08 mark in the first half. "He was getting rebounds and scoring close to the bucket, and I couldn't really do much," Brooks said.

Matt Gibson and Jeff Blackett also scored in double-figures for Hawaii. Gibson had 11, while Blackett added 10.

Hawaii was the SIU's fifth opponent in nine days, and the Salukis will have had seven days off before their next game Dec. 7 at Arkansas-Little Rock.
