Reis highlights 2005 Hall of Fame

The 2005 Hall of Fame Class was announced Tuesday by the Southern Illinois University Athletic Department, highlighted by the induction of long-time SIU broadcaster Mike Reis . The class includes Grancisco "Pacho" Castillo, Donnell Daniel, Terry Finn, Bill Hancock, Kasia McClendon, Reis and Gary Wilson. There will be a ceremony celebrating the inductees' achievements and services to SIU on Jan. 28, 2005.

Reis, who is also know as the "voice of the Salukis," leads the seven inductees and has become a sports icon in Southern Illinois throughout his 26 years of service.

Reis graduated in 1978 from SIU in radio-television, and has worked for SIU ever since as a play-by-play announcer. He presently calls games for Saluki football, men's basketball and baseball. In addition, he hosts many radio call-in shows and Saluki athletic functions. Reis said he is a little surprised that he will be inducted.

Although he is one of the most noticeable and prominent names in athletics, he believes that he is not as deserving as the athletes and coaches that made an impact on Saluki sports.

"Often times this sort of stuff goes to people who are playing or coaching," Reis said. "For a guy who didn't play and wasn't going to coach to be in the athletic hall of fame is pretty special."

Castillo, a tennis player, was a part of the College Division National Championships in 1964 and runner-up finish in 1963. He also posted a 16-0 record in 1964, was an All-American and posted a 39-10 career record.

Daniel helped lead the Salukis to a I-AA National Championship in 1983 as a cornerback. He was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year as well as the Associated Press All-American. After graduating from SIU, Daniel played with the United States Football League.

Finn, who was a wrestler from 1962-1964, was a three-time national champion first in 1963 at the NCAA College Division in the 123-pound weight class in 1963. In 1964, he won the 115-pound weight class in the NCAA College Division championship as well as the 115-pound weight class in the NCAA University Division championship in the 115-pound weight class.

Hancock, a decathlete for SIU from 1972-1975, made history by being the first decathlete to clear 7 feet in high jump and was given All-American status in 1975 after finishing fifth at the indoor nationals in high jump.

McClendon, who participated in women's basketball from 1994-1997, was a three-time MVC Defensive Player of the Year and holds the SIU career steals with 366.

Wilson led the Salukis to their first men's basketball NCAA Tournament in 1977, which advanced to the Sweet 16. In 1978 he was named a First-Team All-MVC pick, and in 1979 he was second-team All-MVC.

His records include eighth in career scoring (1,513), sixth in career rebounding (841) and fifth in career blocks (99). He was drafted to the Kansas City Kings, but did not play in the NBA. Wilson passed away due to a heart attack in September.
