To think that I saw a great SIU team

When walking to class, passers-by say to me,
"Tell me Mike, what great things do you see?"
They tell me there's nothing,
There's nothing to see.
I look at them gawking
Now how can that be?
All the long way to class
And all the way back,
They look for the wonders
And smoke premium crack.
There's nothing they've seen,
On this campus fine
But I see a team
Most don't pay much mind.
That can't be my column, that's only a start,
I'll say that the team is a fine work of art.
And that is a story all will read,
If I say that I saw a great SIU team.
But great will not do
To describe this fine squad,
To circulate newspapers,
Use words that are odd.
Brandon Jacobs,
A certified plunker.
He's a scoring machine built like a bunker.
Those are words that people will read,
To know all about this fine SIU team.
Arkee Whitlock,
Napoleonic warrior
He runs as majestic as old queen Victoria.
Joel Sambursky,
A man not too dumb
Can change a whole game with his opulent thumb.
Alexis Moreland,
The taker of heads
Loves his new Gateway championship threads.
These are the leaders,
Some others you know,
Like Royal and Kill and Jack-Jumbely Joe.
They are the team this region does love,
Seemingly with help from the guy up above.
He seems very much on this team to be keen,
And to think that I saw it from an SIU team.
The close games were few,
Others, they had no clue,
Of just what this No. 1-ranked team could do.
They were kind to some,
And others beat down.
They pummeled and pushed and made wear a frown,
Those who spread bread with the butter side down.
The Panthers and Statesmen and Western Illinois,
They all left Carbondale with very little joy.
The scoreboard was lopsided and opponents were smitten,
SIU killed them all like poor little kittens.
The banners they wave.
The students they drink.
The Salukis are winning before one can blink.
Look over there!
A peculiar score.
SIU's winning 420 to 4.
But this is quite normal,
Quite usual, not odd.
This team has no idiot, loser or clod.
We are family, they sing at midfield.
It seems very corny, though they will not yield.
This a team cliché, boring and true,
They are all part of the vaunted Kill crew
Saturday was truly a sight to be seen,
And to think that I saw it from an SIU team.
