BitDefender

Category: Antivirus

Platform: Windows

License: Freeware/Closed Source

BitDefender is one of the most highly-regarded antivirus utilities on the market today.  Many antivirus packages rely more on brand-recognition than actual ability to catch and delete malicious programs.  This program is used by many experts and is free to download.  If you're an SIU student, you also have the option of downloading McAfee Enterprise Edition for free from the SIU ftp server.

Windows Anti-Spyware

Category: Anti-Malware

Platform: Windows

License: Freeware/Closed Source

From the makers of Windows XP comes a surprisingly good set of tools for removing spyware and other malicious programs from your computer.  This software will most likely come pre-installed with the next version of Windows, but you can get a copy for free right away.  This software is highly recommended for those of you who aren't already using another anti-spyware utility.  Spybot SD, mentioned in a previous article, is also a good choice.

JAP

Category: Internet Utility

Platform: Windows

License: Freeware/Closed Source

JAP is a software suite designed to let you surf the internet in total anonymity.  While this program is still in the development phase, it offers users significantly better identity cloaking than they would have with just a connection, a browser, and a firewall. These days, it pays to keep data and identity as private as possible, and using programs like these is a big step towards having a truly private and anonymous Internet experience.  Grab a copy before someone decides for you that your privacy doesn't need protection or is a "security risk".

Doomsday

Category: Games

Platform: Windows

License: Freeware/Open Source

Let's end this week's downloads on a positive note, eh?  If you're over the age of 20 or so, chances are you remember playing a little PC game called "DOOM" back in the day.  Chances are also equally good that if you have a computer purchased in the last 5 years, you haven't run the game on that machine.  Well, now is the time for some nostalgia!  Doomsday is a software package that incorporates a new version of the original game that utilizes true 3D hardware acceleration, allows for new features, high-resolution graphics, true 3D models, and it runs on the most recent versions of Windows XP.  All of this allows you to play that old game in a whole new way on your current PC.  It's really a lot of fun, and it certainly brings back memories.
