In a race between South Park and Aqua Teen Hunger Force at getting out more DVD box sets per year, the winner is clearly Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
While South Park Season Five still isn't out yet, ATHF surpassed its one-a-year average and totally monopolized on South Park's down time to release a truly remarkable box set that once again delivers the goods. Each disc of "Volume Three" is jam packed with all the ATHF any fan could hope for on a moderately priced two-disc DVD set.
The collection starts out with two fraternity brothers from outer space who come to earth looking to party in the first episode. As the collection goes on down the line, Carl loses his body, Meatwad gets a new used car, Master Shake comes across a demonic submarine sandwich, the ATHF is visited by a wisecracking intergalactic cube, Carl comes in contact with a clown wig that turns its wearer into a clown and Master Shake writes a new birthday song with Zakk Wylde, the axe master for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society.
Unlike the two prior volumes, there aren't any Easter eggs (hidden features) to be found on either of the discs. But with all the goodies that have been packed into all three volumes so far, it's really no wonder why the ATHF team is starting to keep it to the basic features and extras. For a lot of fans, it's the extras that make the volumes worth buying since Cartoon Network used to show two episodes every weeknight until Sealab 2021 took the spot a few months back.
While the ATHF team didn't create any puppet short films as in the past, they did think to include a really cool video showing the whole process of writing a show from the conceptual phase up until the final script run-through. This feature and the wicked-awesome answering machine greetings are the key reason for checking out this DVD set. The extra features also include deleted scenes for "Broodwich," a Dr. Weird ending for the "Clowning" episode" and additional footage of an ice cream social featuring Dr. Weird.
The extra features also include karaoke videos made for the birthday song with Wylde playing guitar. The viewer is greeted with a montage of soothing nature settings, all while experiencing the awesome power of Zakk Wylde and someone singing the song doing a Geddy Lee (Rush lead singer) impression. The lyrics are listed on the screen with an adorable little Master Shake sitting in the corner of the screen banging his head incessantly through the entire song. It's as funny as it sounds. There are versions done with the Geddy Lee voice, the Master Shake voice and a version without lyrics or vocals for the viewer to try and test his or her skills. Of course there are the compulsory inclusion of script pages for those who like to read.
With Thanksgiving coming up it would be ideal to add the ATHF Thanksgiving episode onto the list of must-watch Thanksgiving shows. Instead of the same boring parade or watch grown men grab each other, give "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume Three" a whirl.
