Dry Kill Logic 'dreaming' in St. Louis

The New York hardcore metal group Dry Kill Logic, formed in 1993, will spread its do-it-yourself hardcore, heavy metal work ethic to St. Louis Nov. 24 when they headline at the Creepy Crawl. The group is touring in support of "Dead and Dreaming," which was released in October.

Dry Kill Logic's 2001 release "The Darker Side of Nonsense" put them on the hardcore/heavy metal map, but when the events on Sept. 11 things started to change for the group.

Even though they'd toured with the likes of Coal Chamber and System of a Down, in the end the money did the talking. When record buying and overall consumerism began to drop, record companies urged their hardcore acts to go with a more competitive edge. That typically meant the bands should lose whatever edge it was they had and join the fray by toning down it down and going for a melodic sound that would be more radio friendly.

After having to change their name twice, from Hinge to Hinge A.D. and finally to Dry Kill Logic, and being asked to compromise their art, the band members chose to leave the label. While the lead singer, Cliff Rigano, maintains it was in the best interest of the group, rather than go to another label that would ask the same thing of them, Dry Kill Logic opted to release their music on their own Psychodrama label.

"We're doing this for the fans and because we believe in ourselves," Rigano said in an official press release.

"We enjoy playing the music we love, whether it's in mom's basement or on a stage in front of 10,000 people. We decided to write the record we wanted, not an album someone sitting behind a desk thinks he can sell."

With "Dead and Dreaming," Dry Kill Logic has taken their destiny into their own hands. Written while on tour in 2002, "The Dead and Dreaming" was completed earlier this year and is a more updated representation of the group's intensity and aggression, all done without major label support.

"I've been to the other side, and there's no pot of gold," Rigano said.

"All success comes from hard work; there's no glory from signing to the elusive record deal. All new bands say, 'My life would be great if I could just get a record deal.' I've got some news for you. It's only the beginning."
