The Polar Express

Tom Hanks reteams with "Forrest Gump" director Robert Zemeckis in this computer animated-tale based on the popular children's book. Although everyone else insists Santa Claus is make believe, one little boy is rewarded for his faith to the contrary when a steam train pulls in front of his house and takes him to the North Pole. The film, which cost about $1 million a minute, may be the most sophisticated use of computer animation we've seen in the movies.

After the Sunset

Directed by Brett Ratner, who has made a name for himself as an up-and-comer with films such as "Red Dragon" and "After the Sunset" casts Pierce Brosnan as a former jewel thief who retires to an island paradise. Although he says he's given up his old life, an FBI agent, played by Woody Harrelson, isn't so sure. Can anyone say cat and mouse? The cast is rounded out with Salma Hayek and Don Cheadle.

Seed of Chucky

After an endless stream of "Child's Play" movies and the 1998 entry "Bride of Chucky," the little guy is back for more, and apparently, he brought offspring with him this time. This really cracks me up, because I recently saw an ad in the Chicago Sun-Times in which the local Planned Parenthood clinic was promoting the movie. Something tells me Chucky didn't actually stop in for advice before spreading his seed. Anyway. Also starring Jennifer Tilly, Redman and Billy Boyd.

Playing at SPC Films:

Anchorman

Never before has a movie made you feel so stupid for laughing so hard. "Anchorman," last summer's vehicle for the mega-talented Will Ferrell, is uncontrolled chaos and a film with absolutely no attention span, but damned if it isn't fall-down hilarious. Watch for the onslaught of cameos, although it might be kind of hard to miss them. The film will play at 7 p.m. Thursday and 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Student Center Auditorium. Admission is $4 or $3 with a student ID.

Found footage films

MCMA Cinematheque, in partnership with the Big Muddy Film Festival, will present an evening of short 16mm experimental found footage films Saturday night. The films, which run for a total of 74 minutes, include the following: Jay Rosenblatt's "Smell of Burning Ants"; Martin Arnold's "Passage a l'acte"; Naomi Uman's "Removed"; Peter Tserkassky's "Outerspace"; Abigail Child's "Dark Dark"; and Jane Geiser's "Fourth Watch." The screening will be at 7 p.m. Saturday in Wham's Davis Auditorium. Admission is $3.

Cane Toads

This documentary, which is being shown in conjunction with Geography Awareness Week, charts the attempt to introduce Hawaiian sugar-cane toads into Australia as a counter-pest. Instead of doing their jobs, though, the toads simply reproduce like crazy and throw the entire ecosystem into disorder. The film will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Faner 2533. Admission is free.
