Ray

Jamie Foxx finally takes command with this highly touted biopic in which the underrated actor reportedly delivers a powerhouse performance. Although „Ray,‰ which chronicles the drugs, the women, the blindness and, most importantly, the music that made Ray Charles a musical icon, could go the way of sheer worship, director Taylor Hackford seems to have kept a strong focus. Plus, the soundtrack should be good, too. With Rgina King and Kerry Washington.

BOTTOM LINE: Regardless of how the movie is, Foxx has poured some real muscle into this one. Even the preview shows that.

Saw

This creepfest, coming just in time for Halloween, pits Leigh Whannell and Cary Elwes in a room together as two captives imprisoned but confused as to why. However, they are simply pawns in a larger game, and moreover, they are about to be the next victims of a psychopathic killer named Jigsaw. All the clues lead to old murder investigations done by a stalwart cop (Danny Glover), and all the answers stem from there as well. Directed by James Wan.

BOTTOM LINE: Sounds like a good Halloween scare. Psychopathic killers rock.

Fahrenhype 9/11

A direct response to Michael Moore‚s controversial film, „Fahrenhype 9/11‰ does its best to refute, dispute, debunk and discredit all the information that made „Fahrenheit 9/11‰ so incendiary. Narrated by Dick Morris, formerly one of President Clinton‚s chief advisers, the film is presented on campus by the College Republicans and will play at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Lawson 141.

BOTTOM LINE: Pretty interesting, I‚m sure. Can‚t wait until movies are about something else, though.

SPC Films

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Director Alfonso Cuaron takes the reigns for Harry‚s third round at Hogwarts, and boy does he deliver results. Darker, subtler and more well rounded than its clunky predecessors, „Prisoner of Azkaban‰ is the first step for the franchise away from the slavish interpretations that drowned the first two. With any luck, it will lead to an even darker chapter. The film will play 7 p.m. Thursday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and 3:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the Student Center Auditorium.

BOTTOM LINE: Even if you‚re not a Potter fan, this one has the goods, and Gary Oldman is wicked fun.

Devil‚s Backbone

During the Spanish American War, a young orphan named Carlos finds himself in a school for orphans of the war, and as violence closes in all around, Carlos helps to get revenge for the bombs that have dropped on the school. Confronting the facts of war and the loss of innocence, director Guillermo del Toro („Blade,‰ „Hellboy‰) works wonders that have made him famous in Latin American cinema. In Spanish, with English subtitles. The film will play as part of the International Film Series at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Wham Auditorium. BOTTOM LINE: Might as well check it out. If nothing else, the title is killer.
