Catching up with the Copyrights

The Pulse caught up with one member of The Copyrights, lead vocalist/bassist Adam Fletcher, for a recap of the band's adventures to New York, an update on their upcoming album and plans for the future.

Pulse: First off, the tour to New York. Was there anything that happened that you really didn't foresee happening? Any, say, happy accidents or shortcomings that pissed you off?

Fletcher: Not really, nothing really really bad. It was short, so there wasn't much of a chance for too much bad luck I guess.

Pulse: It was a long drive. Did you ever get lost?

Fletcher: Yes! Philadelphia is a tough city.

Pulse: Now that you're home, reflecting on the tour as a whole, would you consider it a success? I mean, were the fans elsewhere really receptive of you?

Fletcher: Yeah, totally. Every town we played we met great people. People that made us feel right at home in their city. That stuff means a lot to us.

Pulse: Do you think that you made any new fans, or connections that might lead to something bigger? Another tour perhaps?

Fletcher: We made a lot of new friends. The style of punk rock we play isn't as popular these days as it used to be. So, with the pop punk scene being so small now, it's like a nice family of bands. We're doing a month-long tour in August with the Beatnik Termites.

Pulse: Did you do anything fun outside of music, or was this all driving and playing?

Fletcher: Ohhh, we went to the Statue of Liberty!

Pulse: You've gained a new member since the tour. Where's Davey, and why'd he leave?

Fletcher: Davey had to go back to Canada. Since he left we added Ken (ex-Last Laugh) on guitar.

Pulse: Is Davey ever coming back? I miss Davey, and I didn't even know him.

Fletcher: I don't know. It's a long drive from Montreal to Carbondale. We've talked about going to Canada for a tour. So, that's something we'll be working on.

Pulse: Are you catching any flack for Mike Martin being the only guy not in The Copyrights from Last Laugh? Has anyone teased you about it? What's Mike think? I'm sure you guys talk.

Fletcher: Yes...we didn't plan it out that way at all. We're all still friends, so I don't think it's a big deal at all. Besides, Mike's new band, Like No Other, is great. I think you'll be hearing a lot about them in the near future.

Pulse: With one tour out of the way, what's up on the agenda for the band now? Where do you guys want it to go?

Fletcher: We're recording a full-length CD at Sonic Iguana at the end of the month. So far we've been talking with Insubordination Records about releasing it. We're all really busy with music. If it's not the Copyrights, then it's our other bands.

Pulse: What will be the name of your new CD?

Fletcher: Right now we have a nine-song demo that we recorded at the Revolution Room. It's available from us for $4. Since it's a demo, we never named it.

Pulse: When can we expect to see the release of your new CD?

Fletcher: It should be out by July.

Pulse: Where can people pick it up?

Fletcher: It depends on the label; if Insubordination Records releases it you should be able to get it anywhere. Locally, you'll be able to pick it up at Plaza [Records], I'm sure.

Local band the Copyrights will perform April 12 at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago and April 13 at the Creepy Crawl in St. Louis.
