Kick In Emergency kicks out the jams

For four years, Kick In Emergency has played throughout Southern Illinois. And in that period of time, the band members say they have evolved and created their own unique sound.

Kick In Emergency, which performs at 10 tonight at Hangar 9, was formed four years ago while the members were still in high school in their hometown of Vandalia.

The members consist of Jesse McClary on vocals and guitar, Zach Anderson on guitar, Heath Luster on bass and Andy Wright on drums. Wright is the band's official mascot because of his "sex appeal," according to McClary.

McClary says that Kick In Emergency produces "melodic rock with pop sensibilities." Some of the bands the members of Kick In Emergency note as influences are The Cure, AC/DC, Jimmy Eat World and the Get-Up Kids. McClary shyly admitted that as a child, he even used to dress up like members from the band KISS.

McClary said that throughout the years, Kick In Emergency has evolved musically.

"We started out as punk, but we've moved away to try and find our own sound," McClary said.

"We've created original songs, if not an original genre," Luster added.

McClary says the band is a democracy and that he, Luster and Anderson share the task of writing songs. Kick In Emergency currently has a nine-song demo CD out on Hot Seat Records (www.hotseatrecords.com). A four-song CD is scheduled for release by the band in either late summer or early fall. The band also has some songs available at www.mp3.com.

According to the band, members will go back into the recording studio to produce their next full-length CD after they've completed their upcoming tour, which will encompass parts of Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. McClary said this juncture marks the "crossroads" of their career.

According to Luster and McClary, Kick In Emergency's goal of being able to make a living out of being in a band remains undaunted. The band shall continue to develop and evolve without any added gimmicks, they said.

"KISS has makeup," McClary said. "But we have Andy."

Kick In Emergency is playing at 10 p.m. at Hangar 9 with Tomorrow Never Comes and Shufflepuck.
