Glam rock is not just a look or an attitude for the members of Eye Candy. For them, glam rock is all about entertainment.
Eye Candy, which performs at 10 tonight at Hangar 9, has made it a goal not only to provide a broader sense of variety, but to also bring a different image to Carbondale's music scene.
Eye Candy's glam rock influences are deeply seated in bands such as The Cure, Cheap Trick and Motley Crue. Lead singer and guitarist Bobbie Ruth says his stage personality and presence stem from Iggy Pop and David Bowie.
"I wanted to pick up the guitar when I heard Motley Crue, and I wanted to put it down when I heard Bush," Ruth said.
Joining Bobbie Ruth in Eye Candy are Nikki Twixx on guitar, Missy Shadow on drums and Jonny Mascara on bass.
Some of the members of Eye Candy have appeared previously in the local bands The Holidays, The Waxdolls, The Hoplites, Well-Dressed Army and The Normans.
According to Mascara, the idea for starting Eye Candy came when Bobbie Ruth appeared on his couch one day. After an initial conversation involving the New York punk band D-Generation, the two soon realized they had a mutual love of Motley Crue and The Replacements. Since then, they were joined by Twixx and Shadow, and have been working for the past few months on a small, yet rather original set of songs.
Ruth said Eye Candy is an attempt to revitalize some of the visual entertainment that was prevalent among bands of the late '70s and early '80s. Ruth also described the band "a batch of pop with a hint of glam, a dash of sass and a sprinkle of trash."
"Music isn't fun anymore," Ruth explained. "I'm sick of heroin rock."
As for the future of Eye Candy, the possibilities remain unseen. But Ruth remains firm that anything is possible with Eye Candy.
"There are no limits," Ruth said. "Anything can happen."
Eye Candy is playing at 10 tonight at Hangar 9 with The Potential and the Lou Reeds.
