For some bands, notoriety and shows are few and far between. But according to the members of Untied, being in a rock band is a dream that is finally starting to pay off.

Untied, which performs tonight at Pinch Penny Pub, was formed just nine months ago by Chris Psenicka (vocals), Kyle Gansel (guitar), Jarad Mitchell (guitar), Stan Marczewski (drums) and former bass player Tim Hoke. Current bass player Josh Rothchild joined the band four months ago.
"Everything has exploded all of a sudden," said guitarist Jarad Mitchell. "We went from practicing three nights a week to playing shows two nights a week."
Apart from various other gigs, the band also played at the Herrinfesta Italiana.
The band performs its own original songs in various styles of rock music. Mitchell cites classic rock as having a great influence on him. He attributes Guns 'n' Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" as being the reason he started playing guitar in the first place.
Mitchell said the band bases most of its songwriting on personal issues.
"A lot of it is stuff that we've gone through," Mitchell said. "Most of the songs are about women."
Mitchell said that while most of the song is about the opposite sex, the group's songwriting style is a little different than most other bands.
"I put it in symbolic form. I want others to relate some of their own stories to our songs," Mitchell said.
Some examples of this alternative style can be heard on the band's three-song sampler, self-titled "Untied." Mitchell also says writing a song in this fashion helps create a greater identification between the listener and the band.
The name of the band relates to how the members want to have a detachment to other styles of rock and not be labeled. This desire to go without being labeled reverts back to the implementation of various speeds and styles in Untied's songs.
"We're just trying to be different," Mitchell says.
