Our word

Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the square pegs in the round holes. Here's to the martyrs who fight losing battles and the dreamers, inventors and builders who change our horizon. Here's to the rebels that challenge the status quo and the doers that never underestimate the impossible.

You may think them young, disobedient or mad. We call them genius.

How else would a professor stare at a class of starry eyed freshman and mold them into tomorrow's leaders of technology and art?

How would a child from inner city Chicago swear off a life of poverty and crime and become the first in his family to receive a college degree?

How would a struggling football team with 10 loses last season find the heart to take the field again - not because they might win but because they love to play?

You see, the ones that are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do. And if one word could describe the Daily Egyptian editorial board it would be crazy.

Perhaps you're wondering how playing football or the opinions that appear daily on the Voices page, both Our Word and yours, can change the world. The SIUC Football team can speak for itself, but as for the 12 personalities that make up the editorial board, we're not proposing we have the ability to move mountains or solve world hunger.

We don't even have the ability to end hunger in Carbondale. But perhaps we can see to it that one man eats. And I dare you to tell a man that is having his first meal for the week that on that hour the world is not a better place.

Yeah, so after we left he spent the rest of his money on cheap booze, but that's aright, a lot of us would do the same thing. And unless you are this man, make your judgment of him slowly and with caution.

As a Daily Egyptian editorial policy, we will form our own opinions slowly and with caution. We will not disagree simply for the sake of argument. But when our leaders fail us by taking the wrong action or by taking no action we will speak with volume and persistence.

We encourage you to do the same. This page is an open book and the story that it writes can be one of change. If you think that sounds a little crazy then perhaps together we can be genius.
