Letters to the Editor can be submitted by e-mail,
voices@dailyegyptian.com , or fax
as long as voice verification is available. Include your
area code and phone number with your letter. Letters for
which verification of authorization cannot be made will not
be published.
We also need you to refer to the article you are
responding to in your letter. An excellent example would
be to include the URL in your letter. (i.e. Dear Editor, I'm
writing in response to the DE Article on RSO funding,
http://www.dailyegyptian.com/fall98/9-15-98/RSO.html )
Students must identify themselves by class and major,
faculty members by rank and department, non-academic staff
by position and department.
Letters can also be submitted in person or mailed to the
editor at our address.
Policies for Letters to the Editor are determined by the
DE Editorial Board. They include the following:
- Letters should not exceed 350 words. Longer letters
may be shortened before being published.
- Letters may be edited for length, spelling and
grammar. The editor will take care not to change the
writer's intent or tone.
- Published letters include the writer's name.
Exceptions will be made rarely and only when the
Editorial Board determines the subject matter might place
the writer in jeopardy, and the subject matter is
important enough to justify withholding of the
name.
- Only original letters written for the DE audience
will be considered for publication. Third-person letters
will not be published.
- To be printed, letters should be on a topic of
current interest.
- Generally, the DE will not publish letters that are
personal attacks, are in poor taste, are potentially
offensive to large groups of people or are potentially
libelous.
- The DE reserves the right not to publish any
letter.
- The Editorial Board may decide to limit the number of
letters a single writer can have published each semester
as long as the limitation is applied equally to all
letter-writers.
