SIUC Receives New Computer Equipment
by Keva GastonSIUC is equipped for the 21st century thanks to an $860,000 grant in new computer equipment that was distributed to several of the University's departments.
The University Computing Advisory Committee, headed by Geoffrey S. Nathan, assistant professor of linguistics at SIUC, raised funds for the new equipment by increasing student tuition costs. The committee, made up of four staff members and two SIUC students, reviewed 40 requests for computer equipment. Out of 40 requests from several departments, Information Technology, Student Center, University Housing, Morris Library, Education, College of Liberal Arts, School of Art, Chemistry, Disability Support Services, College of Engineering, Philosophy, Architecture, Physics, English and Mathematics were funded based on technology needs. The equipment is expected to arrive in the summer and installed in the fall.
The College of Engineering has already received its new computer equipment, which includes 19 new desktops in the college's laboratory.
Although the new computers have the same software, "the old computers were over four years old and in disrepair," Roger Missavage, director of the Computer Center in the College of Engineering, said.
