Dear Editor:
The other day I heard that in 2000, the current population of people ages zero to 28 was almost equal to the number of total abortions since 1973. The speaker's data were derived from pro-life and pro-abortion organizations and the U.S. Census. The numbers startled me so much I had to do some homework of my own. Though I did not find the same years the speaker referred to, what I did find still validates the speaker's claims. My research focused on those born since 1976-1999 (those within the age group of two to 26). Since 1976, the total number of abortions is approximately 35,159,248.
This number comes from the Alan Gutimancher Institute, a special research affiliate of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest provider and promoter of abortion, and the pro-life organization, National Right To Life.
U.S. Census reports the population of zero to 24 year olds to be 35,300,000. If you find this hard to believe, look it up yourself. Wouldn't it be nice to have a few more "warm bodies?" Ever heard that before? I can still hear schoolteachers using that expression when looking for volunteers.
When I look at the numbers above, that expression comes to mind. "I need some warm bodies to help over here and ..." Are the effects of unlimited abortion rights becoming clear to you? Take for instance the shortage of nurses, doctors and teachers. How about the enrollment at our own University? Consider the many student organizations that would love to have more members and volunteers. What are your plans after class? Ever have a hard time finding someone to shoot some hoop with, play tennis or go to the mall?
I do not mean to oversimplify things. I know many factors are involved. Yet, should not more emphasis be placed on the simple arithmetic and this question: "How can we get keep more babies alive?" The 2- to 26-year-old generation: 35,159,248 dead and 35,300,000 alive. That's basically 1 for 1. That gives me the chills.
