Severe lack in judgment concerning editorial cartoons

Dear editor:

The Daily Egyptian chose Ash Wednesday to run a cartoon deprecating the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). As a practicing Catholic, I found it tasteless and offensive, yet I remained silent. I am not proud of that. When a second cartoon was run, this time on Good Friday, alluding none too subtly to the same issue only packaging it differently, it had to be recognized that the timing was not coincidental. With the media indulging in a feeding-frenzy as each revelation of an alleged act by a pedophilic priest is aired, it is probably little wonder that the student press should clamor to get aboard the bandwagon.

This is a sad and very serious issue. Lives have been permanently scarred, reputations forever damaged, even if some of the accused are later proven innocent, and the Church itself has been indicted by the court of public opinion for the sins of a few. To trivialize this in cartoon form and to release these cartoons on two of the days most sacred to Catholic Christians, demonstrates both insensitivity and a enormous lack of judgment. I am deeply disappointed.
