Dear Editor:
I cannot tell you how tired I am of reading the ignorant rantings of people who know NOTHING of what they write about to the Daily Egyptian. Are people really this dense? Let me pose a question of my own, specifically in regards to Victor Hagler's recent letter and to anyone else who shares his opinions. Do you even know why organizations such as the NAACP, Blacks Interested in Business, Minorities in Computer Science and the National Society of Black Engineers were put together? Historically, minorities were denied their rights, even though the constitution stated that ALL men were created equal (laughable). These included the right to vote, the right to pursue desired careers and even the right to use facilities that were SUPPOSED to be for the general public.
All of this was based on ethnicity. I would love to say that these organizations which, unlike the KKK, the Aryan Nation, the Neo-Nazis and MANY other hate groups, were created to promote togetherness and support for those with similar interests and struggles, are no longer necessary. But, what Mr. Hagler and many otherwise nice people don't realize, is that minorities are STILL denied rights and privileges, based solely on color. It's done a little more discreetly, yes, but done nonetheless. My advice to anyone else who has such an opinion: KNOW ABOUT SOMETHING BEFORE YOU CRITICIZE IT!
I understand that everyone, not just minorities, experience problems in this great country. Sept. 11 is a testament to that. But the racism and prejudice should have been dispensed with a LONG time ago. This problem is solved so easily, yet we're still struggling with it!! That's why you keep hearing about it. It's summed up in one word: TIRED. Minorities are TIRED of dealing with being treated unfairly just because we're different! It's 2002!! Once everyone is treated equally, then maybe the organizations that Mr. Hagler mentioned with such disdain will not be needed!
