Dear Editor:
Finally, a strong conservative voice is invited to our campus and before anyone hears her out, Ann Coulter is quickly berated by an "open minded" liberal on the opinion page. I love the double standards. I am sure if Ann Coulter were a liberal feminist she would be portrayed as a courageous champion of women's rights. However, as the D.E. pointed out, she is a conservative. A conservative who opts not to limit herself to the narrow scope of women's rights, but rather the state of politics in this wonderful republic and ... surprise! She is suddenly a "bimbo has-been." A "bimbo has-been" who has served as an attorney for the U.S. Dept. of Justice, is a former practicing lawyer, a former clerk for the 8th district court of appeals, a best-selling author and a nationally syndicated columnist. An impressive list for any "bimbo has-been."
I am not at all surprised that an "open minded" liberal like Andrew S. Jackson would feel this way. Most liberals are still recovering from the sting and disappointment following the Clinton administration, when they were forced to realize that conservatives were right about the character of Bill Clinton. No, we are not talking about Monica, we are talking about Clinton's last minute pardons of Mark Rich and a handful of other pardons for contributions. If anyone would read Ann Coulter's columns, they would realize she writes on current political issues, which would not include Bill Clinton over the last 12 months.
Hopefully, Ann Coulter's lecture will open the door for more conservative voices at SIU, like Cal Thomas or Bill Crystal. I would encourage anyone who shares the thoughts of Andrew S. Jackson and (Lord, help us) Joseph Johnson to get together enough fortitude to hear a contrary opinion for once. God knows conservatives have to do this on a daily basis at SIU.
